C.T. Young diary on hookworm eradication campaign 1910.

This series contains a diary kept by Dr. C.T. Young during the 1910 hookworm eradication campaign in west Florida that the State Board of Health directed. The diary describes sites visited by the doctors and procedures followed during testing and diagnosis. The doctors visited schools frequently and recorded the specimens taken and results obtained. Dr. Young recorded his experience at the schools and noted the cooperation of parents and teachers. In addition to providing medical treatment for the disease, Dr. Young strongly advocated rural sanitation.

Article XV of the 1885 Constitution provided for the creation of the State Board of Health, but the Board was not created until the 1889 special session of the Legislature (1889, Ch. 3839, Laws). The session was called by Governor Francis Fleming when yellow fever reached epidemic proportions. The Board was given powers to investigate and prevent yellow fever, smallpox, and cholera.
